India to launch Mars mission this year


India are set to become the next nation to send a spacecraft to the Red Planet in a daring new mission. While India still has a long way to go to catch up with the US, Russia and it's neighbor China, the country is nonetheless investing large amounts in to forwarding its space program with both a mission to Mars and a navigational satellite expected before the end of the year. The $83 million Mars orbiter will launch in October and will arrive there nine months later.
India's space endeavors have been met with a significant degree of criticism however, with high levels of malnutrition, power shortages, sanitation issues and an economic slowdown some have argued that the country should be spending money on their problems here on Earth before investing it in endeavors elsewhere. India will launch its first mission to Mars this year, President Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday, as the emerging Asian nation looks to play catch up in the global space race alongside the United States, Russia and its giant neighbor China.
